“Every day we must perfect what we did yesterday.” This hand-written quote by Che Guevara adorns the wall of a tobacco production facility in Vinales, in the Western part of Cuba.
Here women workers carefully sort out dried tobacco leaves. The aroma of fresh tobacco fills the air as skilled hands groom the leaves.
The scene is intercut and accompanied by the music of a classic Cuban song performed by talented street musicians in Trinidad.

El Romerillo is an old and very poor neighborhood on the outskirts of Havana.
Cuban workers heading to Havana from the countryside started settling here in the 1960s, and they built their houses out of whatever materials they could find including corrugated tin and cardboard.
El Romerillo became one of Havana’s most notorious slums.
This reel was made possible thanks to the KCHO Studio Art laboratory, a cultural non-profit organization whose purpose is experimentation, development, dissemination of the arts and human understanding.
The laboratory was founded by the Cuban artist KCHO.

It’s not unusual for Salsa dancers to break out spontaneously in the streets of Trinidad.
In this reel a small gathering of musicians attracts a lively following as the players wind their way to the Central Plaza of beautiful Trinidad where more Salsa dancers will congregate.
These events often continue through the night as seen in this reel.
